Health Surveillance of Employees

Health surveillance includes pre-placement, periodical and post employment medical examinations required under various statutes such as Mines Act, 1952, Factories Act, 1948, Building and other Construction Workers Act, 1996, etc. Regular follow up and constant vigil is required for early detection of occupational and non occupational diseases and protecting health and well being of employees.

Evaluation of Chest Radiographs for Pneumoconiosis

The chest radiographs of workers  exposed to mineral and other dusts such as silica, asbestos, stone, etc are required to be evaluated in accordance with  ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses (2000) as per the recommendations of 10th Conference on Safety in Mines.  Evaluation by trained experts is required for detection of silicosis and other pneumoconiosis and evaluation of disability for the purpose of compensation and rehabilitation. 
HWP has Asian Intensive Reader of Pneumoconiosis Project (AIRPneumo)  certified readers and holder of B Reader certificate issued by National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) USA for evaluation and classification of chest radiographs in accordance with  ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconiosis (2000) with experience of evaluating more than 10,000 chest radiographs for Pneumoconiosis.

Training of Medical Doctors in use of ILO Classification

The medical officers engaged in health surveillance of persons exposed to dust and are at the risk of developing dust related diseases, need to be trained in use of ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses (2000). All Medical Officers of Periodical Medical Examination centers in mines and Occupational Health Centers in factories need to have training in ILO Classification.
HWP has experience of organizing national workshops on “Detection of Pneumoconiosis and use of ILO Classification” for medical officers of mines. Its experts have been involved in conducting number of training workshops on use of ILO Classification with Directorate General of Mines Safety, Dhanbad and National Institute of Miners’ Health, Nagpur.

Ergonomic Evaluation of Mining Machinery

As per the recommendations of 10th Conference on Safety in Mines, Ergonomic Assessment of all mining machineries is required to be carried out before introduction in mines and periodically for any ergonomic health risk. 
Experts from HWP have experience in evaluation and assessment of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) in mines for ergonomic health risks to operators.

Monitoring of Occupational Hazards at Workplace

The monitoring of workplace hazards such as dust, noise, vibrations, heat & humidity, toxic gases, toxic heavy metals, chemical exposure is a highly specialized job. Monitoring of hazards is required under Mines Act, 1952, Factories Act, 1948 and others. Monitoring of hazards is necessary for compliance with statute and prevention of adverse effect on health of employees.
HWP experts have considerable experience in monitoring of occupational health hazards such as dust, noise, vibrations, etc in both opencast and underground mines. They also have expertise in monitoring of asbestos fibre dust levels in factories with Membrane Filter Method.

Health Promotion and Awareness Programmes

Health promotion and awareness programmes on various life style diseases and occupational hazards are necessary for promoting good health and preventing occupational diseases. They form important part of strategy in implementing management policies on promotion of good health and prevention of diseases.
HWP has been organizing health promotion and awareness programmes for workers and officers in mines and industry.  It has also has expertise design and development of awareness and health promotion material for employees.

Risk Assessment for Occupational Diseases

Risk Assessment for occupational diseases is an important tool for determining occupational health risk to the employees and prioritizing implementation of prevention and control strategies. 
HWP has conducted Occupational Health Risk Assessment and prepared plans for risk reduction in mines and construction industry with expertise.

Health Impact Assessment studies 

The clearance from committees of Ministry of Environment and Forests requires that every new project and renewal or expansion of existing project must have a study conducted to assess its impact on health of the employee and the nearby population as part of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). It is also important that the industry take necessary measures to prevent adverse impact on the health of general population residing in nearby area.
Experts from HWP have experience of conducting Health Impact Assessment studies for mines and successfully presenting before the Expert Committee of Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Silicosis Detection and Surveillance 

​Silicosis is the most common and debilitating occupational diseases caused by exposure to silica dust. It is a notified diseases under Mines Act, 1952, Factories Act, 1948 and Building and other Construction Workers Act, 1996. It is also a compensable disease under Workman Compensation Act, 1923 and ESI Act, 1948. However, very few cases are diagnosed and notified due to lack of awareness and training among medical professionals.
Recently, large number of cases have been detected and diagnosed among stone mine workers in Rajasthan and many more are likely to be detected. Healthy Workplace has taken up the challenge for detection and surveillance of silicosis.
HWP has experienced professionals for formulation and implementation of policies for detection, prevention, control and rehabilitation of silicosis.
